Bibles for refugees in the detention centre Vordernberg
“We’re so grateful for the Bibles you’ve been able to send us in some many different languages. It’s really hard to find books in some of these languages, and the people here have been really interested in the Bibles.”
Recently, Katharina Wallner of the Austrian Bible Society visited the detention centre to bring Bibles in more languages and to find out how the Society can offer further assistance.
The detention opened at the beginning of 2014, and since Easter the Society has made available Bibles, New Testaments and booklets on biblical themes in around 40 languages.
“People are definitely reading these Bibles,” the librarian assured her. “Most recently, they’ve been borrowing Bibles in Farsi, Arabic, Chinese and English.”
Discussing other needs, it became clear that audio Bibles and New Testaments would be very welcome, since some of the detainees cannot read or write. On her return to Vienna, Ms Wallner arranged for audio New Testaments in Arabic, Dari, Urdu, Pashtu, Russian and English to be sent to the centre.
She later received an email of thanks from the librarian:
“I want to thank you again for your visit and for providing the Bibles and audio Bibles. The audio Bibles you promised arrived today and we’ll put them in the library straight away.”
