International Literacy Day 8th of September
We want to remember the International Literacy Day on the 8th of September.
Worldwide there are 781 million illiterate adults. Millions of children lack access to education because of disadvantages such as poverty, gender, location and ethnicity. For a long time, the Bible Society has put a focus on teaching people to read and write.
In Burkina Faso, Solange attended a literacy class of the Bible Society. She had almost died after taking an overdose of medicine because she could not read the prescription. After this, she decided that she wanted to be able to read and write. When she heard the Bible Society was offering a literacy class in her church, she immediately registered. She did not go to school as a child because her parents decided only to send her brothers. This would benefit the family better. Since she would leave the family and marry.
The literacy class opened a completely new world for her. Now she is attending the choir in her church, writing her own songs and she can take notes when her pastor preaches. She is also very thankful that she can now read the drug prescription so that she knows how many tablets to take. She plans to go on learning French in a formal school.
